Vol. 6, Issue 1
December 2006 |
Pre-examination issues (part three in a series) affecting platelet function testing are highlighted in the Focus Article. Test results from low (aggregometry) and high (PFA-100®) shear systems can be significantly impacted by variability associated with specimen collection & handling as well as sample preparation & storage. Additionally, a CLOT-BYTE takes a ten year journey through the evolution of ADAMTS-13 activity assays. Activity of the protease, in the absence or presence of inhibitory antibodies, is pertinent to making a diagnosis of thrombotic thrombocytpenic purpura (TTP). |

Vol. 5, Issue 4
September 2006 |
Dr J Evan Sadler, an international expert on Von Willebrand Factor/Disease, is the guest author for a Focus Article wherein he describes how the Von Willebrand Factor cleaving protease, ADAMTS13, influences the phenotype of Von Willebrand Disease and Acquired Von Willebrand Syndrome. In addition, a History & Trivia section provides a timeline of discoveries in VWF/VWD, another section updates us on changes to the 1994 VWD classification, and in the final feature the laboratory’s armamentarium for assays used in making the diagnosis of VWD is discussed. |

October 2005 |
World renowned experts Drs Philip de Groot and Ronald Derksen from the University Medical Centre in Utrecht, The Netherlands, present the Focus Article discussing assays for the detection of Antiphospholipid Antibodies. A Clinical TidBIT and CLOT-BYTE related to Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia are contributed by another internationally recognized expert, Dr Theodore Warkentin. The third feature introduces “Nanobodies”, discussing their structure/function and applications in research, diagnostic testing, therapeutics, and consumer products. |

Vol. 5, Issue 2
July 2005 |
Dr Jerry Ware guest authors the Focus Article which challenges us to think beyond our customary understanding of the role that platelets perform in hemostasis & thrombosis and to consider them as players in other areas such as cardiovascular disease, tumor metastasis, and neurological disorders. Other features include: 1) three tables for ISO 15189:2003 International Standard elements relating to Management Requirements, 2) an article on how clot-based factor assays are performed, and 3) a Lab Pointer on the making of dilutions.

Quality is the focus of this newsletter installment.
Pre-examination issues as they relate to esoteric coagulation
testing are spotlighted in the Focus
Article (part two in a series).
A second offering showcases ISO15189:2003. This standard
harmonizes how laboratories worldwide will address quality
initiatives and technical competency. A Lab
Pointer outlines how to test
for Prekallikrein deficiency and the History & Trivia selection shows
how some anticoagulant proteins were named. |

|
Vol. 4, Issue 4
January 2005
|
This issue is devoted entirely to
the Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS). Articles include:
1) a nearly 100 year history of cardiolipin antibodies
and the Lupus Anticoagulant (LA), 2) functional, clot-based
testing for the Lupus Anticoagulant based on the extrinsic,
intrinsic, and common pathways, 3) solid phase assays
for antibodies to cardiolipin & beta2-Glycoprotein
I, and 4) clinical & laboratory criteria for APS.
Also included are some "Pearls of Wisdom."

Vol. 4, Issue 3
October 2004
|
This issue highlights numerous methods/instruments used
to evaluate platelet function. Additionally CLOT-BYTES provide a "first description", principle, and
outline of the methods or instruments that are featured. A presentation and several Lab Pointers discuss pre-analytical and analytical issues related to
platelet aggregometry testing. Clinical
TidBITS highlight how to interpret platelet
aggregation tracings and a brief history of ristocetin,
a platelet agonist, is presented. |
 |
|
Vol. 4, Issue 2
August 2004
|
Introduces the reader to Cellular
Adhesion Molecules (CAMs) and other cell receptors in
hemostasis. The issue is dedicated to CLOT-BYTES
the serve as synopses regarding: Integrin Superfamily,
Leucine-Rich Repeat Family, Ig Gene Superfamily, Selectin
Family, and Seven Transmembrane Family. Numerous
"cartoons" illustrate how these molecules
work and how these interactions are involved in platelet
thrombus formation.

Vol. 4, Issue 1
April 2004
|
Focus Article
highlights pre-analytical variables impacting coagulation
testing. This is the first in a series to assess
methodological variation. The article is timely
in that the latest recommendations by NCCLS for obtaining,
delivering, and handling of specimens are included.
Clinical TidBITS are offered
that show how biological variables affect hemostasis.
Another presentation addresses genetics as a biological
variation by examining the relationship between polymorphisms
in the gene for Cytochrome P-450 2C9 and warfarin dosing.

Vol. 3, Issue 4
January 2004
|
Focus Article
looks in depth at the Mixing Study, one of the most
common assays performed in a general coagulation laboratory.
Six key issues are identified and their impacts on the
assay are explored. An additional offering looks
at technical aspects for performing a Bethesda Assay
used for quantifying Factor VIII inhibitors. For
fun, meet the "Coagulation Zoo" and test your
knoweldge.
